Amtrak is not bad at all for short trips. For a longer journey, forget about it. Try looking at travel from Boston to anywhere south of DC.

Yeah, I know, I live in Boston. The NE corridor subsidizes literally the entirety of the rest of the Amtrak network that *isn't* profitable.
