@FediThing Don't you have to have some kind of giant antenna, or is that ham radio I'm thinking of?

@LillyHerself Short answer: no. The antenna that comes built into the radio is good enough. These work just like normal radios. It used to be very common that people would take a small shortwave radio with them when they travelled abroad, so that they could listen to the news from home. Longer answer: if your hobby is to receive the maximum possible number of stations then hobbyists will build giant antennas to receive absolutely everything they can. But that's totally optional and most people won't do that.
