@FediThing yeah, but transmission needs quite a lot of infrastructure and energy, so many stations have shut down. But the air is still pretty active. You may catch some quite interesting stuff from Africa, or some radio shows from Middle East or Asia in languages where you can't understand a word, but it's still fascinating to listen to :)

@bonkers It's a lot easier to set up a shortwave station than a satellite internet constellation. Even small countries used to have their own station, I'm sure they could set them up again if needed. I'm not saying shortwave would definitely be needed, but the cost is just a tiny one-off purchase and the potential usefulness is so great.
