it's been fascinating watching the modern self-driving car hype and wondering "why are all of them individually running programs evaluating their own perception of the environment and each other and not, like, an open distributed system where all the cars are orchestrated together per their needs and specs" and then a little voice in my head goes "american individualism" (but also one of them is conceivably easier than the other. distributed systems scary)
