They will probably make it more expensive to legally acquire content that is playable on a dumb TV than to get the same content for smart TVs. You're paying extra for having indefinite access to the content rather than revokable subscription-based access. Of course, as a consumer, you can become a criminal, with all the associated increasingly harsh consequences.
