On reflection, I always knew Morrissey was an asshole. It’s plain as day in the lyrics. I just liked it because he was an asshole to the kind of people who harassed nerds like me. In hindsight given his late-stage assholery, I think the lesson is: don’t tolerate bullies even if they’re bullying people you dislike. Shut them down regardless.
