:questionbox: what’s my anglo name?
i am the name of a region centred around Meningie in south australia
i am also the name of a coastal lagoon in south australia
and i am also the name of a national park in south australia
about 156 km south east of adelaide
the national park protects a coastal lagoon ecosystem
situated on Ngarrindjeri country, and my anglo name is presumably derived from a Ngarrindjeri word meaning neck, or long and narrow
the western end of the lagoon is near the mouth of the murray river
(near hindmarsh island)
and i extend south east along the younghusband peninsula
the beach on the coastal side is the longest beach in australia
i am a place of enormous biodiversity,
and especially well known as the setting for colin thiele’s 1964 novel storm boy, a 1976 movie based on that novel and a 2019 remake of the movie
The largest pelican rookery in Australia is in this region at Jack Point, just off the Princes Highway and about 7 km (4.3 mi) north of Salt Creek.
