The hardware was easy to troubleshoot as they often had analog meters on the display, showing the power supply voltages. The CPU often had an adjustable negative bias voltage to help nudge the silicon gates to work. Lights were on the front of the computer to show where the stack was, and perhaps the address and data bus activity. I/O lines were always given their own light. You always knew exactly when your computer was transmitting or receiving data.Not so today. Commercial software locks up this valuable control and monetizes it for their hundreds or thousands of third parties, including complete transcripts of what you typed and how your mouse moved when displayed a picture they selected on social media for you. They say privacy operating systems are a threat to law enforcement, because they can't crack the encryption and would be used by pedophiles. If they were concerned at all about pedophiles, they would arrest the confirmed pedophiles and rapists running the country right now. Modern technology can easily take away our privacy and give it all to those who want total control. #privacy #security
