Straight, as in a straight line, ends with g h t. Strait, like a water strait, has no g h. To pick a random example of such a thing, an example not at all chosen because of the actions of the insane moron in charge of my country, I'll go with the Strait of Hormuz. Just in case you have to know how to spell it right in the near future, for no particular reason.
