I thought ugly pixel art scaling filters are a modern scourge, but I just found out that LucasArts used to apply them in the Macintosh ports of their adventures to boost their perceived resolution.
Looking at the screenshots, they would have achieved much better results by simply hand-crafting high-resolution variants for all in-game text and leaving everything else alone.

@cobbpg Yeah, that was a problem with Macs having different screen resolutions than what was common for games originating on other platforms (VGA, Amiga, Atari ST, etc).
