@alexdbolton@mathstodon.xyz I've heard similar stories about other lecturers! Diana Wynne Jones told basically the same story about an undergraduate course she took from Tolkien, though she later reflected that he'd probably been deliberately trying to get rid of them all so he could get on with writing The Lord of the Rings, and by staying for the whole course she'd foiled his plan.
