When work has to be measurable to be valuable, what happens to the important things that can’t be measured? What happens to trust, kindness, care, and the other things that set great work apart from slop? Can we do anything to swerve away from the race to the bottom?

Edwards Deming, and his espousing what his colleague Lloyd Nelson said: “The most important figures that one needs for management are unknown or unknowable, but successful management must nevertheless take account of them.”
