@benfry I see scientists in various fields doing this too and it terrifies me. I think the best explanation is mental laziness, coupled with hype and a lack of understanding, and a refusal or inability, on the part of many people, to engage critically with these (or any) technologies. It's amazing how many people I have talked to who just accept LLM outputs without a second thought, listen to an explanation of why that's a bad idea, and then turn right around and do it again.

@lcwheeler Yes, have seen a lot of this too and find it really frightening, *especially* that last part. “Yeah, nah, it's not great… I'm not happy about it either”

@lcwheeler @benfry it's especially disturbing when you find out the chatbot is telling the user the truth, that it is just a computer program, not sentient, and not actually capable of thought or gaining experience, and they ignore it, and keep acting like the opposite is true.
