@sqhistorian Probable answer: crouch / sneak was a specific keybind before sprinting was - for many years sprinting could only be activated with a double-tap - and 'shift' is slightly easier to reach from a WASD hand position than Ctrl is
...but it is definitely not in line with the standard and should probably be changed at this point

@lunarloony Well, regardless of whether sprint/run came later... how tf did they land on Shift for crouch? I may be a stick in the mud on this but... some conventions exist for a reason.
