The trick of the politician is to tie your identity to them, “I’m a democrat”, “I’m a Trump supporter”, “I’m a trans”, “I’m an American”, “I’m a Brit”, “Hey there bud, what’s this aboot, I’m a Canadian eh!”…
This does a couple things, first it grafts the tribal part of your brain to them and their causes. I think this is the part of the brain that creates and maintains stereotypes and heuristics (thought shortcuts). It’s the part that creates an “Us” from disparate people, and a “Them”.

2/2 The other thing it does is weaponizes your natural talent for self-justification so that it can be turned to justify the leader, his policies, his actions and of course to paper over his faults, just like it does for your own actions, ideas and faults. This is why human organizations work, it’s how tribes survive, or cults are created. But the system can be hacked, and if you don’t keep an eye on yourself it can get in and make you less yourself, and more what the group demands.
