As if Vincent Orange’s quixotic campaign for mayor weren’t enough, yesterday I saw a sign for Kevin Chavous’ campaign for an at large council seat. Turns out it’s a second generation politician with that name (and a different middle initial), but before I found that out I felt like I’d gone back in time 20 years.

When I first moved here I lived with a friend in Crystal City. She and I were having breakfast at the Market Lunch when somebody* came around gladhanding for his campaign. We told him we lived in VA and he left us alone, but after he walked away my friend admitted she was still registered in DC and she just didn’t like him. For years after I moved into the District I used her trick and lied to canvassers, telling them I was registered in VA so they didn’t waste my time. I’m not that nice now, so people working for shitty campaigns might find out how I feel about their candidates. * Seems like it might have been Harold Brazil, campaigning for mayor? It could have been the elder Kevin Chavous, but I don’t think it was.
