The year I was born: my mother was not allowed to have a driver's license unless my father signed for it. Similarly, she was not allowed to have a credit card in her own name. This isn't ancient history. This was in my lifetime. Relatedly, my great grandmother whom I knew and met, was not permitted to vote until she was in her late 30s.
