I really like the new photo of the Earth from Artemis II, where South is at the top of the photo and North is at the bottom. I couldn’t figure out what landmass was in the photo until someone rotated it. And once I recognized Africa and Spain, it really drove home how maps have messed up my perception of the planet. Why shouldn’t I be able to recognize a landmass no matter its rotation? I should spend more time looking at maps with alternate orientations.

@beej@kind.social I am reminded of the West Wing episode where this was basically a subplot. A group was petitioning to have the map used by schools and federal institutions changed away from the common Mercator projection to one with more accurate landmass sizes and also to display it with Antarctica at the top.
