I'm not much of a historian, nor a classicist. Yesterday, something I read mentioned Croesus and the oracle of Delphi. Here's what the Wikipedia article on Croesus says regarding his war with Persia [modern day Iran]: "...Croesus responded by consulting the oracle of Delphi, who told him that he would "destroy a great empire" should he attack Cyrus."
