Sonnet 18 (The Laundry Day Variant)
Shall I compare thee to a laundry day?
Thou art more endless and less temperate:
Rough spins do shake the fragile seams away,
And cotton's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the dryer's breath doth glow,
And often is its linty trap obscured;
And every matching sock its mate lets go,
By chance or tumbling mechanism lured.
But thy eternal pile shall never fade,
Nor lose possession of the stains thou ow'st;
Nor shall the closet brag thou dwell'st in shade,
When in eternal hampers thou just grow'st.
So long as men can breathe and wear a shirt,
So long lives washing, and the endless dirt.
