I’m honestly sick of the attitude in this industry that you periodically go on call and can get paged for any reason while you’re on call, and it’s just normal and OK this happens. And then there’s the smug people who say “well it wouldn’t be like that if you did X Y Z.” Yeah no shit, if things were different, then things would be different. I work in the real world and I haven’t seen a very functional real world model of this yet. #technology #bigtech #software

    @mrysav I hate that too. I had a very anxious dev who was panicking after some unplanned downtime he caused. Of course, it was Friday, and of course the work stretched on until 8 PM while I was on call. I finally told him "if this is truly an emergency, put in an emergency ticket so I can respond to it." After checking with his boss, all of the sudden, it could wait until Monday. I've noticed any time I've outright challenged "urgency," it tends to disappear. Because, post covid, people think everyone is available at all hours of the day and night now.
