Always a treat to read a veteran like @jaybushman on the history of ARG-like work, especially when they pull in comparisons to film and immersive theatre history! Firsts are rarely truly firsts… https://jaybushman.kit.com/posts/being-first-is-overrated

I could even say that’s a core part of my upcoming book on immersive experiences. Before Sleep No More there was Tamara; before Tamara there was environmental theatre; before environmental theatre there were directors like Okhlopkov and Piscator and Evreinov. Before them, modern pageants, re-enactments, before them, masques; and further back to Robin Hood games and mystery plays and tournaments, and back still beyond the scope of my book to Ancient Greece and Egypt, and on and on.

@adrianhon@mastodon.social @jaybushman@simian.rodeo That thing about a ‘hoax’ really hits home — some friends set up a TEDx Summerisle (ie The Wicker Man) thing on Twitter — live-tweeting it as a fake conference that ended badly, obviously — and it honestly didn’t occur to us that people wouldn’t recognize what it was, instead of feeling deceived. We completely underestimated how the scattershot nature of the medium *reinforced* the versimilitude. It was fascinating but oof, I still feel bad.
