When Hands Helping Paws Project was being incubated (before it was born) there was a core idea of what we wanted to be and do: Help responsible pet owners with unexpected cost of care for their pets. Today we will be asking for you to help us do just that and do it for a pet owner who is the most-deserving we have helped. Gort’s story - Gort is now a 6 month old, 13c pound French Bulldog who has had a very rough start. Gort was born with a cleft palate which meant he could not nurse. But instead of looking for help when he was born his less then responsible breeder let him languish for 3 days - getting no nutrition. In comes Amy, Gort’s mom. Amy has had him since he was 3 days old - and he weighed JUST 6 ounces when he arrived. He only survived because of the excellent care provided by Amy and her vet. Gort was tube-fed every 2 hours for months. You see cleft palate puppies cannot be bottle fed - they go from extended tube feeding to hard food - so they must be at least 5 weeks old and have teeth. Shortly after Gort came to Amy they realized he is also hydrocephalic which means he has to be on a cocktail of medications and watched very closely. That's 2 strikes - but not the end. Strike 3 is that Gort was BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome), This means he literally cannot breathe properly. At times he needs to be put on oxygen to keep him alive! Strike 3 is why we are here. Gort desperately needs a surgery to cut his elongated palate and Laryngeal saccules as well as widen his nostrils. The hydrocephalus exacerbates the breathing problems. Gort struggles with breathing at times and will only get worse as the weather gets warmer. This surgery must be done by an experienced specialist and due to Gort’s complex medical situation will most definitely be at the high end of the $6500.00-$8500.00 range.
