For folks who may not know this: It's not enough to just delete a potentially sensitive file, you need to overwrite it with garbage data first, to make recovery nigh impossible. Luckily, GNU's got you covered there, with the shred utility. shred -u /path/to/sensitive-data Consult your friendly neighborhood *man* for more options. 😁
