In late 1937, Aalto worked again behind enemy lines with Spanish guerrillas in the Battle of Teruel. And on May 23, 1938, Aalto led the successful amphibious operation at Carchuna, Motril on the southern coast of Spain, which resulted in the rescue of 300 Republican prisoners held in the Fort of Carchuna. The raid was the only operation of its kind ever undertaken by the Spanish army. (3/5)

During WW2, Aalto was recruited to the Office of Strategic Services, but Irving Goff & other OSS Lincoln veterans reported to the OSS head, General Donovan, that Aalto was gay and requested he be ejected from the team. In 1942, Aalto was transferred to an army training camp. Because of this betrayal by the OSS Lincoln vets, Aalto drifted away from contact with the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.
