@jenn@pixel.kitchen And I think the analogy holds up even further: you should probably never try to make a meal *from scratch* in a microwave. But if you've *already* made a really good stew, it sure speeds up the process of getting new smaller stew-shaped meals out of what you've got leftover!

@pbrane@sigmoid.social @jenn@pixel.kitchen holy shit the microwave is an amazing parallel. I found an old microwave cookbook recently from the 70s, written in peak microwave hype by a person purporting to be a member of the international guild of microwave chefs. The food has the same uncanny valley vibe as generative AI. All these weird combinations of things being made to look like other things for some reason - like carved hotdogs stained with beetroot juice on a bed of warm pinapple.

@pbrane@sigmoid.social @jenn@pixel.kitchen but then god gave us air fryers and suddenly anything was possible

@pbrane@sigmoid.social @jenn@pixel.kitchen I'm too young to have experienced microwaves early on, but I came here to suggest air fryers for the same

@pbrane@sigmoid.social @jenn@pixel.kitchen You probably meant that as a joke, but my mother, child of the 50s, actually did "roast" whole chickens in the microwave. *shudder* Somehow we all survived!
