A quotation from Montesquieu For the popular state is the liberty of poor and weak persons and the servitude of rich and powerful persons; monarchy is the liberty of the great and the servitude of the small.

A quotation from Robert Pirsig You are never dedicated to something you have complete confidence in. No one is fanatically shouting that the sun is going to rise tomorrow. They know it’s going to rise tomorrow. When people are fanatically dedicated to political or religious faiths or any other kind of dogmas or goals, it’s always because these dogmas or goals are in doubt.Robert Pirsig (1928–2017) American philosopher, writer Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, ch. 13 (1974) More about...

A quotation from Jonathan Swift That was excellently observed, say I, when I read a passage in an author, where his opinion agrees with mine. A quotation from Edmund Burke I have no idea of a liberty unconnected with honesty and justice. Nor do I believe that any good constitutions of government or of freedom can find it necessary for their security to doom any part of the people to a permanent slavery. Such a constitution of freedom, if such can be, is in effect no more than another name for the tyranny of the strongest faction; and factions in republics have been, and are, full as capable as monarchs of the most cruel oppression an...

A quotation from The Bible I’m just a human like everyone else. I’m a descendant of the first person who was created out of earth. My flesh was molded into shape during the time that I was in my mother’s womb. Over the course of ten months, I took shape from her blood, built up out of a man’s seed and a night of pleasure. When I was born, I gulped in the same air as everyone else. I dropped out onto the same earth that all people share. I let out my first cry that was just like the sound anyone...

A quotation from Eleanor Roosevelt Many of the other boys I saw in hospitals are now leading happy and useful lives, but they carry with them, day after day, the results of the war. The gallantry of youth, bearing handicaps which will be a cross all their lives, seems to me a theme for some great poet. Though the war had to be fought to preserve our freedom, their full reward for their suffering is not yet in sight. To see that it is paid in full measure is an obligation which all of us who liv...

This is crazy…Ohtani will only be paid $2 million a year during his 10-year contract with the Dodgers. The $68 million per year in deferred salary will be paid out from 2034 to 2043 without interest. #MLB https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/shohei-ohtanis-contract-will-defer-68mm-per-year.html

OK…maybe it’s because I’m working on a little “new age-ish” music project at the moment, but I’ve been drawn back in to the music of Basia, and I am completely stumped as to why so many Americans outside her hardcore fan base have forgotten her. Time and Tide was a HUGE album in the late 80s…it went platinum in the U.S. and managed to peak at No. 36 on the Billboard 200 while hitting No. 1 on the Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. That is no easy feat! https://youtu.be/xN1mfwY7gsQ?feature=share...

#3goodthings 1. The black and white cat behaved impeccably at the Vet's. I'm not sure if this is a good or a not so good thing. 2. The Vet does not think that the couple of seizures that he's had are a sign of anything too serious. His blood pressure was rather high so he has to go back to the Vet in a week or two to have it checked again. He is his normal cheeky self, and hopefully the fits won't occur again. 3. I am up to date on household chores.
