”Here’s what…keeps me up at night… It’s the message to every scientist, every doctor, every public health official in America: this is what you get. …if you ever have the nerve to tell a powerful man something he doesn’t want to hear, we will spend the rest of your life making you regret it. …That’s the real cost, and it’s one we’ll pay in the next pandemic, when the best people have all decided that public service isn’t worth the firing squad.” —D.

Welcome back to another special edition of the Abstract! As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, I have saved up some of the most mind-boggling studies from 2026 so far to share while I’m out on vacation. With that said, here are the studies this year that hit the bottle, went hog wild, slithered into prominence, and double-detonated. First, a tale of survival on the high seas from a trash-bound crab. Then: a hybrid emerges from radioactive fallout, a snake in the grass (and lots of other...

AstroHopper part 3 So yeah, I got a couple of hours at the eyepiece last night, and gave AstroHopper a run at finding some DSOs in various parts of the sky. I started off by aligning AH on Arcturus, mainly because it was so well placed for the purpose, then decided just manually push the scope round to M3 (by manually’ I mean that I hadn’t searched for M3 so there wasn’t a direction indicator, I just pushed the scope until M3 was centred on the screen). https://theastroguy.wordpress.com/2026/0...
