This sometimes comes up, but I am from Hawai'i in the sense that I was born and raised there, but not Hawaiian (aka Kānaka Maoli). I am a fourth-gen Japanese-American (aka Nikkei-American) which means my great-grandparents* immigrated to Hawai'i** and that's my heritage. I know some Hawaiian words and customs from growing up there, but it is not /my/ culture. Out of respect to Kānaka Maoli, please don't refer to all people from Hawai'i as Hawaiians or assume they are experts...
