Every year on July 11 the world commemorates the Srebrenica genocide of 1995. Srebrenica remains a terrible testament to the complicity of world governments and international institutions in genocide. The failure of the United Nations to save Bosnian Muslims under its protection is, alongside the Rwandan genocide that occurred a year earlier, one of most grotesque betrayals of the principles of humanitarianism in history. International courts have recognized the massacre of 8000+ men and boys at Srebrenica as genocide. The Republika Srbska's entire war in Bosnia was genocidal, including the three years of smaller massacres and widespread sexualized violence against Muslims across Bosnia that culminated in Srebrenica. The victims of the Bosnian Genocide were Muslim men and women, boys and girls, the elderly and the very young. Tragically, the world has clearly learned nothing from the Srebrenica massacre given that it remains silent and complicit in the face of Israel's genocide in Gaza. Genocide denial is on the rise everywhere. Srebrenica is a reminder of the importance of truth and coordinated action in the face of genocidal threats.
